Tribute to Sheikh Hafiz Masood Ahmed Kagee

The Habibia Soofie Masjid Cape Town would like to pay homage to our Beloved Ustadh and Sheikh, Hafiz Masood Ahmed Kagee, one of the senior Imams of the Masjid and the Principal of the Habibia Soofie Madrassah.

Sheikh Masood was the eldest son of Hazrath Moulana Goolam Kutbudien Kagee. Having been instilled with love for the Quran from a young age, Sheikh Masood began reciting at the age of 4. In 1986, Sheikh Masood started his Hifth at the hands of Sheikh Fuaad Gabier. He later went on to complete his Hifth and pursue Quranic Studies in the Haram in Makkatul Mukkarramah. Here, Sheikh Masood mastered his Tajweed and recitation of the Quran, developing his own unique style of reciting.

Returning to Cape Town in 1992, due to the advent of the gulf war, Sheikh Masood started to assist in the Imamate duties of the Masjid. At his home in Flat Road, he began his life-long service of teaching the Noble Quran.

In 1996, due to the vast growth of students, Sheikh Masood opened Markaz Tahfiz Al-Quran Al-Kareem, at the Habibia Soofie Masjid. As time went on, many students graduated and completed their Hifth at the hands of the respected Sheikh, among whom are Moulana Luqmaan Kagee and many others. Sheikh Masood also instilled in his children the love for Quraan, leaving behind a daughter that is Hafiza and three sons whom are learning Hifth.

Sheikh Masood also assisted in the daily running of the institute and was also very instrumental in the Imamate duties and organising the Taraweeh prayers at the Masjid.

Sheikh Masood was well-known for his beautiful voice and melodious recitations. Men and women, young and old, would flock to the Masjid to listen to his recitation, particularly that of Surah Ar Rahman. Many referred to him as “Ustadh” due to the dedication he showed for teaching the Quran. He was of an easy disposition and was quite humorous at times. He reflected Adab in his character especially towards his elders.

As the years went by, Sheikh Masood’s health soon began declining and he found himself a regular occupant of a hospital bed. Although his physical heart and body weakened, his love for teaching and serving outshone his ill-health and he continued to serve the Habibia Soofie Masjid and its Madrassah.

On Thursday 28 December 2017, Sheikh Masood passed away at his home, surrounded by his family. Many of us will remember him as a teacher and mentor, a person who was admired not only for his unique recitations and melodious voice, but his enthusiasm and zeal in teaching the Noble Quran. To his family, he will be remembered as “Dada”, the first-born of a generation, and the first to return to the realm of the Divine Mercy.

We are reminded of the hadith wherein our Beloved Prophet Muhammad -sallalahu alayhi wa sallam- is reported to have said: “Allah has His own people among mankind.” The Sahabah then asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who are they?”. The Prophet -sallalahu alayhi wa sallam- replied, “The People of the Quran are the People of Allah and those who are closest to Him.” (Ibn Majah)

May Allah -subhanahu wa ta’ala- honour our beloved Ustadh and Sheikh and grant him the highest abode in Jannah. May Allah -subhanahu wa ta’ala- allow him admittance as one of His people, and may he be granted the company of our Beloved Prophet -sallalahu alayhi wa sallam-, the Ambiyaah , and our Pious Predecessors -may the Almighty be pleased with them all-.

May Allah -subhanahu wa ta’ala- count him as one of the special servants of Quran and allow him to be honoured as one of the Quraa of Jannatul Firdaus, Insha Allah. May his Qabr be filled with the Noor of the Quran and may it be a Garden of the Gardens of Paradise, Insha Allah.

The Kagee-Soofie family humbly request your Duahs during this trying time. May Allah Azza Wajal grant Sheikh Masood’s noble parents, his honourable wife, his children and his brothers and sisters, the patience and perseverance to carry on the legacy of love for the Quran and this Deen Insha Allah, Ameen.

“To Allah do we belong and unto Him is Our Return.”
